“Relax, I’m coming.”

The dog grumbled once more before turning around twice and lying back down in front of the door. He let out a long sigh to show his impatience.

The man sighed, too, and let his eyes sweep the view of the beach out the window again. The darkness in the west was fading rapidly as the sun rose behind the house. The surf was light this morning and he could barely make out the sound of the breaking waves. He looked down the beach to the north to see the men still standing there. The one to the south was still fishing, but had not tended his line in some time. Like the dog, they were waiting for him. He would not keep them waiting long.

He returned to the letter he was writing. He thought hard and picked his words carefully. The letter would have many readers before it reached the person he addressed it to, but at this point he really didn’t care. He owed her an explanation and she would get it. Signing the letter, he folded it twice before stuffing it in the envelope. Leaving it unsealed on the table he went to the kitchen. He drained the last drops of coffee from his cup and rinsed it clean before hanging it on the appropriate hook. The dog pranced into the room, his nails clicking on the worn hardwood floor. His questioning look was answered with a smile. The man reached for the leash hanging on a hook. The dog responded by spinning a few circles before bolting for the door. He scratched it impatiently while the man crossed the room. The dog held still as a statue while the man clicked the collar in place before prancing in place again. The man paused long enough for one last look around the small house before opening the door.

The dog leaped through the opening and to the limit of the leash before spinning once and charting a course for the beach. The leash was rarely needed, in place only as far as the sand to keep the dog from chasing anything interesting into the road. The neighbors’ cats lived in fear of him as did the few squirrels brave enough to venture close to the house.

The sun was bright but the man left his sunglasses in his shirt pocket. He squinted east for a quick look and spotted three unfamiliar cars parked on the road. He shrugged them off, turned away from the sun, and walked west toward the beach. The dog tugged on the leash after quick sprints that took him from one interesting smell to the next. Soon they both had sand under their feet and the dog let out a low whine as he gazed at the surf. The man stooped and the dog received an unusual hug before he was set free. He bolted for the group of seagulls resting on a nearby dune, scattering them into the sky. He yipped playfully at them before turning his attention to the surf.
